What is a New Moon and how can we celebrate it?

Moon Symbolism

Goddess / Emotions / Internal

The Moon symbolizes our emotional core and the subconscious realm. This explains why things get a little heated before a Full Moon. When the Moon snuggles close to the Earth, our energy will be at its strongest because the Moon pulls at our emotions. The Sun is the opposite. It aligns with our external selves, the side we present to the world. The Sun symbolizes our personality, goals & desires and self-expression.

New Moon Facts…

  • A New Moon happens when the Moon positions itself between the Earth and the Sun.

  • Since the sun orients behind the moon, the moon becomes invisible in the sky. We cannot see the side of the moon to which the sun is exposed.

  • The Moon finds itself at its greatest distance from Earth during a New Moon.

  • Optimal stargazing time is around a New Moon due to the depth of darkness at night.

New Moon = New Beginning

The 28-day cycle of the moon symbolizes the various cycles of life: From birth to death, the changing seasons and cycles of the self that all humans move through. We can observe ourselves drift within these cycles if we closely reflect on our changing emotions over the course of a month, a season or a year until we are completely regenerated.

The New Moon is the first phase of the Moon’s cycle. This presents opportunities as a time of new beginnings. Like a newborn child, nothing feels impossible and all possibilities are endless. This time allows for dreaming without limitations; a chance to start over. New Moons are for setting your intentions for the coming cycle.

Read our New Moon Ritual in three easy steps below!

New Moon Ritual

Step 1: Reflect

Take this time to go inward. Reflect on the areas of yourself that need love and light.

How can you help yourself?
How can you rise above?
With compassion!

This year’s theme has been compassion, but so often we forget to be compassionate to ourselves. Listen to your intuition.
This year has also been a time of great development for that inner voice.

Can you hear it?
What does it say?
Pay attention. Journal. Meditate. Reflect.

Observe the synchronicities happening all around you.

Blossom.
Breathe with your heart.
Live through your heart.
Visualize your heart’s energy amplifying and radiating outward.

Step 2: Journal

Where were you during the last New Moon?

  • Do you have a journal to read from that time period?

  • Can you remember what was happening in your world during that time?

  • What challenges were you facing?

  • What synchronicities were you observing?

  • What areas of your life pulled your focus?

It might be a good time to revisit this period and see how far you have come, now that we have come full circle. Take some time to write down your thoughts for this New Moon eclipse so you may reflect back once again.

Step 3 : Set Intentions

What do you want for the coming cycle? It may be the next month, 3 months or 1 year. Feel free to determine your ideal timelines based upon these astronomical shifts. It’s the perfect time to set your intentions during this fresh start.

Who do you want to be?
How do you want to present yourself to the world?
How do you want to treat others, and most importantly, yourself?
How do you want to feel?

Try writing down these thoughts as if they were already your reality. This is intention writing!

  • Always keep your intentions positive and in present tense.

  • Have them focus on the desired feeling behind the accomplishment you wish to obtain.

  • For intentions to work, they must illicit an strong emotional response so every time they are uttered, you feel a pull at your heartstrings.

Here is an example:
Let’s say you want to loose weight. Your intention wouldn’t be “I am thin.” Try this on for size (pun intended)… Ask yourself why you want to loose the weight. There is likely a desired feeling behind it. You want to feel confident. You want to be healthy. Or, if your answer is because you think you would be more beautiful or desirable, let’s try again! This is not a positive intention. This is an intention driven by ego. Ego never serves our higher self. Try shifting your perspective. Easier said than done, but with practice anything is possible. Really get underneath your desires and see what is driving you. By understanding our true intentions behind our desires and aligning them to serve our higher self, we empower them into manifestation.

Scenario:
You eat junk food that doesn’t nourish your body. You wish to stop so you feel good in your skin, energized and healthy.

Negative intention:
“I don’t eat junk food. I am sexy and people envy my body.”

How about this instead…

“I only put into my body, that which nourishes me and gives me strength.”

“I am healthy of body, mind, and spirit. I am whole and comfortable in my skin.
I love and cherish my body.”
