Journal Prompts: Women’s History Month

Here we have curated a selection of introspective journal prompts in recognition of the Feminist Movement. These questions are for anyone regardless of gender identity. Please, take a moment this March to investigate your views on the topics below. Feel free to share your insights in the comments.

Need a place to organize your thoughts?

A note: when we use the word women below, we mean all individuals who identify as a woman.

  1. Do you feel there are inherent differences between men, women and non-binary individuals?

  2. Can you list 3 attributes that women should have and three attributes that men should have? Were the traits you listed different for men versus for women? What can we observe by readily identifying these perceived differences?

  3. Name some of the biggest challenges that women face today. Aspirationally, how will these change for the next generation? What can you personally do to make a difference for the next generation?

  4. The Equal Pay Act was signed in 1963, when women earned just 59 cents to every dollar that men earned. Today, women earn 82 cents to every dollar that men earn. That figure gets even lower for women of color. Why do you think it is taking so long to close the gender pay gap? What can be done to close it more quickly?

  5. Women didn’t have the right to vote in all states until 1920. Why is the right to vote so important? What is the cause and effect in denying this right to a faction of people?

  6. Why don’t we have a Men’s History Month?

  7. If you could meet any influential woman, whom would you choose? What questions would you ask her? What do you admire most about her?

  8. Look at significant moments in history and ask this question posed by feminist theorist Cynthia Enloe: where are the women? Write about women’s roles in these important events. What would have happened without them?

  9. What traits have been passed down in the women of your family? What unifying characteristics tie you together? How have they informed your opinions of what a woman should be like?

  10. Write a letter to an influential woman in your life and let her know how she has made an impact on you. If possible, consider sending it to her.

We would love to hear your insightful answers to these questions. Please consider sharing your responses in the comments below!
